Purchasing a Small Business? What to Look For…

If you are going to own a business, it has to fit your wants and needs and has to pay for your life.  Those are fairly consistent messages from me because I believe in them wholeheartedly.

People are different in terms of what they enjoy and areas in which they excel.  To own or lead an organization, one should be in a position to play to their strengths and delegate their weaknesses.  Choosing the right franchise allows you to do that.  At one extreme, you have a traditional franchise that in many ways puts you in a position to where all you have to do is execute the plan laid out in front of you.  People that are good at task execution thrive in that environment.

Great Harvest is different and more in the middle of the spectrum.  We don’t require you to follow a rigid blueprint.  bakery owners outsideInstead we have a recommended set of best practices and leave most decisions to you.  The type of person that thrives in our business is someone that is a creator.  We think of a creator as someone that doesn’t necessarily want to reinvent the wheel, but wants to choose its size and color and spoke design.  The type of person that thrives in our business model tends to be an independent minded person that likes to be in charge and likes to make considered decisions instead of inventing from scratch.  There is a fine line of distinction between the inventor (do everything from scratch) and the creator (someone who takes a basic theory and makes it their own and better).

We present a business opportunity where you can truly be yourself, with a family that you can turn to for help.  We really do think it is the best of all worlds.  You get to be your own boss while still part of a larger network that you can turn to for help.  Included in this network is the home office that offers the perspective of what we see working in most cases, as well as other bakery owners that have been in your shoes.

And, at the end of the day, every business has to make money or it isn’t sustainable.  While we aren’t perfect, we have a track record that says we know what works and what doesn’t and we can help you reach full financial potential in our business.

If this sounds like you, we would love to talk with you about opening your own Great Harvest.

Thanks for reading.
