By choosing things that will make people come back a second time. That sounds unscientific and random but it is the best answer.
When you open a Great Harvest, or any business for that matter, you have a wide range of options to choose from. We all have our personal favorites but that really isn’t as important as finding customer favorites. You can sell the every day stuff every day but the old adage of “you only get one shot at a first impression” is absolutely true. The opening menu in a bakery absolutely, positively has to be special enough to get people to come back a second time.
We lead with a variety of products to show how diverse our menu can be and to give people our most addictive products. It is rare to see a Great Harvest opening without Cinnamon Chip or Dakota bread. Those are just simply products you can’t get anywhere else, so we want you to know how awesome they are. Speaking as a Dakota addict, I can tell you it is a product I go out of my way to buy and not because of what I do for a living. It is that good.
In addition to everyday breads, like Dakota and Cinnamon Chip, we love to share our more specialized breads, like Cranberry Orange or Spinach Feta. My new favorite here is called Anadama. It is lower in sugar and salt than most breads and makes the best toast I have ever eaten.
We also like to show off seasonal products, like Stuffing Bread for stores that open in November. We used to do rolls only in November but we now do them year round. Especially at an opening. Our Virginia Rolls are to die for and we want people to know about them. Again, this is a product you can’t get elsewhere so we want you to learn to love it from us.
The theme here is what I said at first: Make sure you hit a home run on your first day. Show your best stuff. Get people so wowed and so addicted that they can’t help but come in a second, and a third, and a fourth time. Thanks for reading.
