“Here was this woman who is 50 years old, and is told that her bone marrow transplant had failed and she probably only had two months to live. She has all these medical bills and is raising funds for a scholarship. I didn’t know her, but it’s not about knowing the person…it’s about what the person is going through. I just wanted to put a smile on her face.”
Scott called the school and offered to help with a fundraiser at the bakery as quickly as he could. But, he didn’t stop there. He also talked with other local businesses who donated $3,000 in gifts to aid in the cause. Scott says he just pushed for more and more… asking for “whatever you can do.”
One week later, the bakery hosted a special day for Lisa with 100% of the proceeds from the day going to her medical and scholarship funds. Because of her weakened immune system, Lisa was not able to spend time at the event, but she did come in for a few minutes before the bakery opened to thank everyone for their efforts.
Scott said, “I had never met her before, but when she came in and I saw the tears in her eyes I knew… this is why I do it.”
The bakery was packed with lines out the door. The response was so overwhelming that they sold out of products before noon. But, the donations kept coming all day. To date, they’ve raised over $18,000 and donations are still pouring in.
“Some people couldn’t get to the event because of the crowds so they’ve been dropping off money all week and we are still accepting donations for Lisa.”
Scott summed up the event… “Everyone wants to help in a situation like this. And we are fortunate to have a business like Great Harvest where we can donate and help, just by doing what we do and baking whole wheat bread. That’s what it’s all about.”
