Wait, what am I talking about? On Saturday, I embarked on an experience of a lifetime. I am doing the Million Dollar Challenge to benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation. We left San Francisco on Saturday on our bikes and are riding 620 miles to San Diego.
There are people of all types on this ride but there are a few things we all have in common. We all love to ride. We all have a need to give back. We all are in for the experience of a lifetime.
I have done multi day bike rides before and have made lifelong friends along the way. This week is no different. There is something about riding a hundred miles a day over and over and over again with someone that just forms a bond. You should try it some time. (;
The Million Dollar Challenge is unique in that it is limited to 100 riders who all raised at least $10,000 for CAF (thus the name). And for that we get the honor of riding with athletes that may be missing an arm or leg. Or who are paralyzed and using a hand cycle. Or who are vision impaired and riding a tandem with a "pilot" serving as their eyes. We are sending a message not just to the people we encounter in CA along the way but to the entire country and world that people with physical challenges can be athletes, too, if they have the right equipment. All that stands in between a lot of them and athletic success is funding. We are doing our part to help and so can you if you want.
That day three thing? It is the coast -- with 10,000 feet of climbing over 120 miles. After we just had back to back 90 mile days. And before we have to do another 120 tomorrow. That amount of climbing right now is just brutal. But, don't feel sorry for me. I am having the time of my life with the greatest group of people you can imagine. We should all be so lucky.
