Harvest. Cooler weather. Football. Leaves turning colors. Crisp nights. Frost and fog in the morning. I love them all but one thing I really enjoy about the fall is the natural tendency to start to reflect on next year.
In our business, we need to reflect on the value of the quality whole wheat products we bake and also develop new breads and products that are delicious and unique. Never has the food market been more complicated or sophisticated.
- The Food Network has made us all experts.
- Life changes have made more people nesters.
- Fads drive taste preferences as much as anything now.
How do we balance these three conditions? Carefully.
Fads are the easiest. They go as quickly as they come. The trick is understanding what is a fad and what is a long term market shift. We study trends deeply to make our best determinations.
Nesting is an easy trend to reflect upon because it is all about comfort food, which is exactly what we do. It is our core and something we don’t change.
The hardest trend for us to deal with is blending exciting new flavors into our recipes without losing our foundation. Honey whole wheat bread is our core. Flavors that were historically considered exotic are now very mainstream. We are doing our best to give you some options with these fun new flavors while making sure you can still buy whole grain Dakota bread whenever you want. Both are important.
