I teach our pricing software program class to new bakery owners and I ask this question to every group: “Why are children so good at computers?” I get a lot of different perspectives from those in the room but for me it has always boiled down to the fact that children have “No Fear.”
Put me in front of a new computer program or even the latest smart phone and I tend to hesitate, over think and actually read the manual before I go “messing it up.” Children on the other hand will simply go for it… unrestrained by the stifling idea that they might make a mistake. They don’t hold back or consider it a risk if they take the wrong path.
Why is it the older we get the more hesitant we are to take a risk or do something out of our comfort zone? Maybe it’s because we’ve failed at things along the way and have convinced ourselves through experience that not all things are possible. But, imagine what you could accomplish if you brought that “No Fear” attitude to the things you have always wanted to do but haven’t quite been brave enough to try.
Now I’m not recommending you go cliff diving without training or place your life savings on “red” during a trip to Las Vegas. But look at your current “wish I could” list. No matter how simple or complicated your wishes are, ask yourself “What would happen if I had ‘No Fear.’” Whether it is finally going for that really short haircut, moving across the country for a dream job, running your first marathon or starting your own bakery …what’s holding you back?
