Sometimes a bike is a bike, but...
There are also dream machines.
In the spirit of the holidays, I am thinking of toys. I got a new bike for Christmas. It is a really fun and good looking Masi Special Fixed. A nice, simple, training bike. One gear. Steel frame. Cheap. It won’t win any awards for being light but it is fun and great looking. A single gear bike is something a lot of cyclists use for training and fun because they don’t have brakes (except for your thighs) or gears (so even small hills are really hard). A much more intense workout than one would think. If you aren’t sure what I am talking about think about the bikes messengers use in big cities.
And, then there are things like the Serotta Legend. After training on a Masi a custom, high end bike can make even a dolt like me feel good. The Legend is not the most expensive bike in the world but they are completely custom. Every one is made to order specifically to the size and needs of the owner. That is important for those of us that are 6’5” and when I got my legend about 10 years ago it was before the current wave of carbon fiber bikes so it was top of the heap. Now, it is just a mid level bike at Serotta but still the best to me. Titanium rides and handles differently than carbon fiber (or steel or aluminum) and I like how that feels. I would still buy it today and not spend the extra money for carbon fiber. But, there is no question carbon fiber bikes are, relatively speaking, not outrageously priced and are certainly very fast.
What does any of this have to do with bread or business? Not much other than I got tasked to write the Christmas Eve blog so I decided to write about my favorite toy. I can make the leap, and it would be a legitimate one, on how some bread is a Masi (good, functional, passable) and Great Harvest is the custom Serotta or a carbon fiber bike fit for a pro. But, it’s the holidays. Let’s talk business and bread next year.
Happy holidays everyone! Peace and love.
