Thoughts of a Retail Bakery Owner at Thanksgiving

This is the second post by Sara Goodwin Brown, our newest guest blogger. Sara and her husband, Ethan, opened their very own Great Harvest Bread Co. in Burlington, Vermont, during the summer of 2003. They moved across the country from Montana to New England to make their business ownership dream a reality.

Ethan and I have seven bakery Thanksgivings under our belts, and we have a pretty good idea of what to expect by now. What we have in store for us the three long days before Thanksgiving is barely controlled chaos, aching triceps from kneading thousands of dinner rolls, two cranky and neglected sons, lots and lots of customers, and the wonderful energy and camaraderie of having our entire crew in the bakery at the same time.

We will close a little early that Wednesday, and I will walk home in the too-early darkness, worn out, but filled with the relief and satisfaction of a hard-worked and (hopefully) successful holiday behind us. I will be awash with pleasure and pride at the thought of all those rolls, loaves, and treats spreading out from the bakery in a widening circle across Burlington, across Vermont, and across state lines.  My own arms will be carrying far more bread than our family of four could ever eat.  We will relax with the boys for the first time that week, call for some take-out, and our holiday will begin.

We are grateful and honored if you choose our bread and rolls Thanksgiving phototo grace your Thanksgiving table, to stuff your bird, and to feed and nourish your family and friends.  Our breads are made with heart, soul, laughter, and love.  May their goodness pass to all who share them.

Warmly, and with Thanks,

- Sara
