November is the time to celebrate our love for the creamy goodness of peanut butter – it’s National Peanut Butter Lover’s Month. Peanut butter is so beloved that Americans eat three pounds of peanut butter per person every year. That’s about 700 million pounds!
Did you know that peanuts are not actually nuts at all? They are legumes, like beans, peas and lentils. Peanuts have a protein content comparable to or better than a serving of beans! The fat in peanut butter is mostly healthy poly- and monounsaturated fats, which promote heart health. Peanuts are also very high in fiber and many other vitamins and minerals.
Combining peanut butter and whole wheat bread is a win-win combination not only for taste but also for disease fighting and weight managing benefits. Many studies have shown that including peanuts or peanut butter in your diet can help reduce your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Like all foods, peanut butter should be enjoyed in moderation but a few tablespoons a day is a healthy addition to a balanced diet.
Any peanut butter lover’s out there? What’s your favorite way to eat peanut butter?
