I love this time of year -- warm, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. In farm country, the harvest air smells dusty and sweet, and the sky boasts of these amazing sunsets full of brilliant reds and vibrant oranges. The harvest moon is equally as magnificent. As a child, I spent hours riding in the John Deere grain combine with my grandfather, and as a teen, I earned my spending money by driving truck during wheat and potato harvests. Years later, my husband and I planted a small apple orchard. He insisted that we plant this new variety that few had heard of yet. Little did I know then that after we sold the farm the Honeycrisp apple would be such a big hit!
Speaking of apples, there’s nothing like a fresh apple harvested right off the tree. O.K. maybe a fresh peach! Whether you like apples or peaches, or both, you’re sure to find some seasonal fruit baked into something delicious at your local Great Harvest.
Many of our bakeries scratch make these yummy bars. These bars go by a variety of names: savannah, mazurka, crumble, cobbler, or harvest bars. Regardless of the name, the recipe is the same, and it is crazy good! Made with fresh ground whole wheat flour, flavors vary from store to store but peach, peach/blueberry, apple cinnamon, raspberry, raspberry/marionberry, etc. are just some of the flavors you’ll find. Try one of these bars with a dollop of vanilla bean ice cream, and you’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven!
