Great Harvest Celebrates St. Patrick's Day

Celebrate St. Paddy's!

GoudaandStout20x30.previewMarch theoretically ushers in the first day of spring and St. Patrick’s Day.  Since it’s not out of the realm of possibility to snow in June, I won’t hold my breath for spring.  On the other hand, St. Patrick’s Day always arrives in Butte, Montana with a big bang!

If you are not going out to celebrate and join the party revelers, try eating some hearty Montana Stew with Great Harvest Gouda & Stout bread.  It will put you in a festive mood at home!

Montana Stew

Ingredients

6 cups beef stock

2 cups Guinness beer (approximately 1 can)

2 tablespoons of olive oil

1 large yellow onion, finely chopped

5 large garlic cloves, minced

1 pound ground bison (can substitute with ground beef if preferred)

2 tablespoons McCormick Italian seasoning

6 cups Russet potatoes, peeled and chopped into 1“ pieces

3 cups carrots, peeled and diced

Salt & pepper to taste

Directions

In a large stockpot, pour in 6 cups of beef stock and 2 cups of Guinness beer.  Put this on boil.

In a large sauté pan on low/medium heat, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Next add the large, diced onion.  Cook for approximately 3 minutes or until transparent and then add  5 large cloves of minced garlic.  Next add ground bison.  (Bison is very lean and cooks faster than ground beef.  If you use ground beef instead, be sure to drain off the fat once the meat is cooked).  Finally, add the 2 tablespoons of Italian seasoning to the meat.  Stir well.   Once cooked, add meat mixture to the pot of stock and beer.

Once the stock is boiling, then you are ready to add the chopped potatoes.  Boil potatoes for 10 minutes and then add the diced carrots.  Boil for another 3 minutes and then reduce the heat to simmer.  Now it’s ready to eat with toasted Great Harvest Gouda & Stout bread!

Serves approximately 6 people.

Guinness Float

We can’t forget dessert!  After all, this is a celebration.  All you need is your favorite chocolate ice cream and you already have the Guinness beer.  In a tall glass, scoop one (or two J) scoops of chocolate ice cream.  Pour in the Guinness and there you have it!
