Great Harvest CEO Supports Relief Efforts in Japan

Running to Support the Children of Japan Through "Save the Children"

Soon the news media will be moving on with less coverage of the earthquake and tsunami devastation in Japan. It’s just the nature of the ebb and flow of news coverage. Yet many fine organizations are maintaining the drumbeat for relief funds because the needs are so great.

One such organization is Save the Children, which is seeking $1 million to provide psychosocial support to the youngest victims of the tsunami to help them recover from the shock and stress of the disaster. Save the Children is the leading independent organization devoted to the lives of children in need around the world. More than 100,000 children on the northwest coast of Japan have been displaced by the tsunami.

I am personally motivated to raise funds to specifically help the children in Japan, and am running in the LA Marathon to do so on Sunday, March 20. I urge you to consider a donation to Save the Children via my involvement in the marathon

All entrants in the marathon are raising funds for charity with a special emphasis on tsunami relief. The goal is to collectively raise $4 million for charity. The LA Marathon is one of the largest organized road races in the world. Last year more than 25,000 runners participated.

Save the Children will use donations to set up child friendly, safe spaces where children can spend time with other children and trained teachers. This will allow parents to investigate food sources, work, accommodations, and to locate other friends and family. Save the Children will also monitor nuclear power plant developments and help families stay out of harm’s way. 1.5 million households are currently without electricity while the temperatures hover near freezing.

It’s difficult to imagine the despair of losing loved ones, homes, and businesses in the wake of the devastating tsunami. I CAN imagine the good we can achieve together by supporting outstanding efforts of organizations like Save the Children.

Japanese citizens are known for their generous support to international crisis organizations. It’s a privilege for all of us to show them empathy and generosity.

Thank you.
