Why is Fiber Good For You? 4 Reasons to Eat More Whole Foods

Dietary fiber is defined by the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board as a carbohydrate inherent in plants that is unable to be digested and absorbed in the human small intestine. Essentially, fiber is a carbohydrate that has bonds which human digestive enzymes cannot breakdown. Because of this, fiber provides no energy nor is it absorbed, but as it passes through your digestive tract it offers some pretty awesome benefits.

Fiber is primarily found in the cell wall of plants and works to give the cell its structure. There is a wide array of specific fibers with a wide range of functions, but we’ll hone in on the two main subgroups:

Should a Bakery be a Café? Maintaining a Bread-Centric Identity.

Is Panera Bread a bakery? Is Corner Bakery? They both say they are, but in reality they are restaurants that bake some of their offerings. Is Great Harvest Bread Company a bakery? Yes. We bake everything fresh from scratch and make it all by hand. Most of our locations also serve amazing sandwiches that are amazing largely because they are made on our own fresh bread. We basically accessorize our bread with delicious sandwich fillings. That isn’t the case at either Panera or Corner Bakery.

The Art of Perfectly Grilled Hamburgers from Bun to Bun

I absolutely adore the humble cheeseburger: one of the most pedestrian foodstuffs there probably is. As I think most chefs do. Entire tomes have been  written in dedication to this most perfect of foods in all its forms. Why the love affair? The incredible transformation of utilitarian ground beef into a smoky, crisp edged, rosy-centered, juicy puck of deliciousness is certainly one reason. The array of creative, enhancing toppings is another. Perhaps most important of all: the miracle of a perfect bun enveloping all of this glory.

Overcome Fear to Make Meaningful Change in Business & Life: Book Recap

I married into a golfing family. The sport has grown on me to the point where I can even enjoy watching golf on TV (yep, we watched Rory win the PGA Championship last night.) And of course golf movies, like The Legend of Bagger Vance. Remember these lines?

Bagger Vance (Will Smith): You wanna quit Mr. Junuh? You know you can just go ahead and creep off somewhere, I'll tell folk you took sick... Truth be told, ain't nobody gonna really object... In fact, they'd probably be happy as bugs in a bake shop to see you pack up and go home...
Rannulph Junuh (Matt Damon): You know I can't quit.
Bagger Vance: I know... Just makin’ sure you know it too...

I recently discovered that the author of Bagger Vance also writes non-fiction. One of these is a powerful little book that I’d like to introduce you to here: Do The Work! by Steven Pressfield. Pressfield’s books are often about war and battles, and this book follows a battle theme as well. The epic “battle” in this case being You vs. Resistance.

When I read it, I thought about all of the different ways it could apply to my own life, and I found it especially relevant for business owners who face fears and  doubts (from others, from themselves) related to starting a new business and making major business changes. If you find yourself in one of those rough spots, I recommend this book as a tool for business guidance.

10 Characteristics of Successful Great Harvest Bakery Owners

In Franchise Development we are frequently asked, “What characteristics are common amongst your most successful bakery owners?” In a Freedom Franchise system where we value individuality, this is sometimes a challenging question to answer. When I am asked this question, I immediately reflect on the most successful owners I know personally and realize that as people, they are very different. This indicates to me that you can have a variety of skill sets and diverse backgrounds, and still be successful. However; upon further reflection, I recognize common characteristics that each of these owners — either as individuals, or within their owner partnership — possess.

I recently turned to our Franchise Field Teams, the individuals who work most closely with our bakery owners, and asked them to share the common characteristics that they identify with successful ownership in our system. The six team members who provided feedback for this list represent over 90 years of combined experience working with — and in support of — our bakery owners.
